“The Pattern”
Houndstooth Stitch – can be used to practice on a scarf or other items such as a swatch before constructing. The goal is to change the color every two rows creating a houndstooth effect.
Row 1-Foundation Chain- Chain even number of rows,  Sc in second chain from hook BLO, andSc BLO (back loops only) across
Row 2-  Turn, Ch 1, Sc across to last stitch. Change color by pulling a loop through working chain and tightening up previous color DO NOT FASTEN OFF!
Row 3-  Sc in next two sc, spike stich 3 in next sc (see special stitch below), *sc in next stitch, spike-3 in the next stitch* (rep *-* across row)
Row 4- Turn, ch 1, sc across the row. Change color
Row 5-  Turn, Ch 1, sc in first sc, spike-3 in next, across to last two sc, sc in last two sc.
Row 6- Turn, Ch 1, sc across
Repeat Rows 2-6 until piece measures your desired length.

Special Stitches
Spike 3- Spike stitch 3- similar to a sc, you want to insert hook 3 rows down instead of the previous row pull yarn threw and sc two loops together. The row you are working counts as row 1 therefore two rows below.
Sc2tog- Single crochet two together- place hook into sc, pull through and place hook into second sc and pull through, having three loops on hook, pull through all three loops.
Abbreviations
BLO- back loops only
Sc/sc- single crochet
Ch/ch- chain
Spike 3- spike stitch in top of third row below

Note: I originally came across the best houndstooth pattern from Ms. Dora Ohrenstein herself in a skirt pattern. That pattern can be purchased here: http://www.crochetinsider.com/
This pattern is written to be able to adapt for anyone’s hands, please be aware the exampled photos were fit to my hands personally.
In photos, please bear in mind I crochet left handed so if you need to use it for a reference and crochet right handed allow the document to be edited and mirror the photos.

“How to Construct the Gloves”

Wrist Ribbing- note if you miss a stitch on each row it becomes obvious so try to count your sc’s per row every couple of rows to avoid having to go back and re-do them.
Row 1-Foundation Row- Chain 11, sc in second chain from hook and across. (Note: you can also make this shorter for the band if desired doing 7 chains instead, which is good for smaller hands)

Row 2- Turn, ch 1, sc BLO across
Repeat Row 2 until you have completed 29 rows (more or less depending on the size of your hand. Stretch it out and try it out on the wrist if who you are working it for but keep in mind the join adds another row.)

Joining Row- Fold both sides of wrist strap together (careful not to turn). Sc both sides together and pull apart (wear it on the wrist to make sure it is a comfortable fit. DO NOT FASTEN OFF!

The Hand
Chang color to first houndstooth color. Work on side of wrist ribbing. Note : for color changes keep the previous color facing in or when you change colors it will be obvious on the outside.
Row 1- After color change (let’s call it color A) ch 1, be sure to pull previous color tight. Sc on the side of each sc of the wrist band. At the end, join.

Row 2- Turn, ch 1, sc in the round, join, change to second color (Color B)

Row 3- With color change completed, sc in next two sc, *spike-3 in next stitch, sc in following stitch*, repeat * to * until entire round row is worked. Join.
Row 4- Turn, ch 1, sc around join, change color back to A
Row 5- After color change, sc in first sc, spike-3 in following, work pattern around to last two sc, sc in last two sc, join.
Row 6- Turn, ch 1, sc around and joing

Continue working pattern in round until up to the crease on the thumb joint or just below the thumb, see mark I drew with a pen in photo. Also for example I completed 9 rows before starting the next part.
The Thumb Hole
Continue working around the hand but DO NOT JOIN AT THE END.
Work until you get to second marker or crease above the thumb. Once at the point go back to working the join and work in the round until you get up to the fingers.
Fasten off.

The Fingers
At this point you need to decide if you want to make fingerless, texting capable or full fingered gloves. Please see the following examples to make your decision.
Stitch markers, for this part you are going to need 3 stitch markers and place one comfortably on both sides of the area you want to join at. See two examples below…
IMPORTANT: Be sure to do this on both the left hand and the right hand, if you do this on the same hand, you will end up with two of right or two of left. Pretty sure you do not want that J

Fingerless- Remove the glove from hand with markers, and join in first marker, ch 1 and sc both sides of finger together. If this ends up too tight you can ch 2 in between front and back sides of hand. Sc in the round for three- four rows and fasten off. Do this for all four fingers. Sc around, join, turn, ch 1 for each row.
Fingerless thumb- Work the thumb similar to the 4 fingers just worked but decrease (with sc2tog) on each row as needed and work for five- six rows, fasten
off.

Removable fingertips- These are a great option for people who are constantly using touch screen gadgets. They also give someone the chance to do things that need the ability to grip without removing the glove all together (great for pumping gas). In the example I used only the first two fingers and thumb  and left the last two without removable tips but feel free to do all of them.

Begin by working in sc rows just like with the fingerless in the round, joining front and back sides together with 1 sc for each set of stitch markers. Work in the round decresing if needed with crochet sc2tog until you get to crease on finger for the closest joint to the finger tips. Once you reach the crease of fingers, slip stitch into the side of the finger if join is not in a good place, chain for each sc on bottom side and sl st into other side of finger. Now begin sc around working the even number of sc for chain and continue to decrease as needed. Continue working around until past the fingertip (only slightly with stretching need be), across the top slip stitch both sides together and fasten off.

Regular fingertips- Work in the round joining like with the fingerless and work decreasing as needed with sc2tog until reaching the end of the finger. Sl st both sides together and fasten off.

Finishing tips- weave in ends and wet block if needed. Be careful, colors may have a tendency to run, especially with white and red so gentle soaps with hand wash only. If there is too wide a gap between all the fingers, sew the two joining sides together.
